BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is a social security institution focused on providing protection for workers against social and economic risks. It offers four main programs: It provides four key programs: Jaminan Hari Tua (JHT) for old age security, Jaminan Kecelakaan Kerja (JKK) for work accident security, Jaminan Kematian (JKM) for death security, and Jaminan Pensiun (JP) for pension security. 1. Jaminan Hari Tua (JHT)

5.7% of the monthly wage.
3.7% is covered by the employer.
2% is covered by the employee.
Benefits:
JHT funds can be used for old-age needs.
Can be partially withdrawn (10% or 30%) or fully withdrawn under certain conditions.
Example Calculation: If a worker earns a monthly salary of IDR 5,000,000:
Employer contribution: 3.7% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 185,000.
Employee contribution: 2% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 100,000.
Total contribution: IDR 285,000 per month.
2. Jaminan Kecelakaan Kerja (JKK)
This program provides protection against work-related accidents or occupational diseases. Benefits include medical costs, temporary disability benefits, and compensation for permanent disability or death.
Contributions:
0.24% to 1.74% of the wage, depending on the level of occupational risk. There are option of the percentage in HReasily software.
Benefits:
Unlimited medical treatment costs as per medical needs.
Compensation for permanent disability up to 56 times the monthly wage.
Compensation for death due to work-related accidents up to 48 times the monthly wage.
Example Calculation: If the wage is IDR 5,000,000 and the job's risk level is medium (rate 0.54%):
JKK contribution: 0.54% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 27,000.
3. Jaminan Kematian (JKM)
The JKM program provides benefits to the heirs if the participant passes away due to non-work-related causes.
Contributions:
0.3% of the monthly wage. This contribution paid by Employer.
Benefits:
Death benefit of IDR 42 million.
Funeral allowance of IDR 10 million.
Scholarships for two children up to IDR 174 million.
Example Calculation: If the wage is IDR 5,000,000:
JKM contribution: 0.3% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 15,000.
4. Jaminan Pensiun (JP)
The JP program aims to provide pension benefits when participants retire. It also provides protection for heirs if the participant passes away.
Contributions:
3% of the monthly wage.
2% is covered by the employer.
1% is covered by the employee.
The maximum wage limit for calculating Pension Security (JP) contributions in 2024 has been set at Rp10,042,300.
Benefits:
Monthly benefits for retirees.
Compensation for heirs if the participant passes away.
Benefits are payable up to a maximum age of 75 years.
Example Calculation:
If the wage is IDR 5,000,000:
Employer contribution: 2% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 100,000.
Employee contribution: 1% × IDR 5,000,000 = IDR 50,000.
Total contribution: IDR 150,000 per month.
If your monthly income is Rp11,000,000, the JP contribution will be calculated based on the maximum wage limit of Rp10,042,300.
- Employer Contribution : 2% × Rp10,042,300 = Rp200,846
- Employee Contribution : 1% × Rp10,042,300 = Rp100,423
- Total Monthly Contribution: Rp200,846 + Rp100,423 = Rp301,269
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is mandatory for both formal and informal workers in Indonesia in accordance with Law No. 24 of 2011 concerning BPJS. Below is an explanation of who is required and eligible to become participants:
Mandatory Participants
a. Wage-earning Workers or Pekerja Umum (PU)
Workers who receive salaries from employers, such as:
- Employees of private companies.
- Employees of state-owned enterprises (BUMN/BUMD).
- Non-ASN government employees (Non-Civil Servants, PPPK).
Employer Obligations:
- Register all workers.
- Pay contributions in accordance with regulations.
- Contributions are shared between employers and employees (e.g., JHT, JP).
b. Non-wage-earning Workers or Pekerja Bukan Penerima Upah (BPU)
Workers who are self-employed and do not receive salaries from employers, such as:
- Entrepreneurs.
- Freelancers.
- Traders or small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
- Ride-hailing drivers, drivers, farmers, fishermen, and similar professions.
Obligations:
- Fully pay their own contributions.
Voluntary Participants
a. Workers Outside of Employment Relationships
For example, homemakers or students who want to receive protection.
b. Indonesian Migrant Workers or Pekerja Migran Indonesia (PMI)
Indonesians working abroad can also become BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participants for work protection, such as JKK and JKM.
